A Few Additional Points of Interest - by John Oleksak, Registered Architect

  • The building is an irregular pentagon in plan and has five court yards including the entry way.
  • Originally, Sixth Avenue turned west at Carmine Street. There was but one residential block from Father Demo Square to Minetta Street. This block was bisected when Sixth Avenue was re-directed further south.
  • A few of the original tenants still reside at 290 Sixth Ave.
  • In the basement, there are two dressing rooms with toilets and showers originally intended for the use of the doormen.
  • In the "old days" the tenants had individual roof gardens and competed with one another to display their green thumb abilities.
  • The largest original apartment in the building was 1K, a two bedroom unit with
    an eat-in kitchen.
  • Woody Allen has filmed in the lobby of the building and behind it on Minetta Street.
  • The building was converted into a cooperative in 1985.
